Tamir Rice Death by Police Killing

Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old boy was playing with a toy gun in a park when police arrived on the scene and shot him to death within less than 2 seconds!

Arriving on the scene in response to a 911 call stating a child was waving a gun around in the park on November 22, 2014, police wasted no time shooting and killing the innocent 12-year-old who was merely playing with his toy pellet gun the way any child with access to a toy gun would do. The deadly incident took place in Cleveland, Ohio where it is legal for adults to possess and carry guns in public; therefore, it would be fair to surmise that playing with guns as children is a natural way of becoming familiar with weapons so as to grow up and follow adult behavior.

An extremely vital aspect to this case is that during the phone call to 911, the person placing the call told the operator that the gun was probably a toy but the operator failed to pass that information on to the police.

With all of the above info in mind, one could only wonder if the child’s life might have been spared if:

  • The person initiating the call, although telling the operator the gun was probably a toy, could have prevented the child’s murder by becoming proactive in the situation in a more positive manner rather than calling the police on him.
  • The 911 dispatch operator had passed the information to the police as it was told to her by the caller–making certain to tell the police officer that the caller said the gun was probably a toy.
  • The responding police had been more sensitive to the fact that a child was playing in the park, and thus, was most likely yielding a toy gun, not a real one.
  • The officers, when arriving on the scene, would have clearly seen that the kid was not pointing his “toy” gun at anyone and that no one’s life was in jeopardy.

Following the deadly incident, as if shooting the boy had not bad enough, the president of the Cleveland Police Patrolman’s Association, Steve Loomis, claimed that Tamir’s size played a roll in allowing him to cause his own death because he had been big for his age.

When arriving on the scene, police pulled their police car into the grass where the child was, jumped out of the car, and Officer Timothy Loehmann shot the boy in less than 2 seconds as stated above. This officer already had a poor performance record as a policeman and was even pegged as being “untrainable”. What’s more was that after shooting the child, they refused to allow his 14-year-old sister to check on/comfort him while he lay dead (or dying) on the ground; and in fact, they wrestled her to the ground and handcuffed her and dragged her through the snow! Afterwards, they forced her to sit in a police car with the same officer who shot and killed her brother!
